"This is the day which the Lord hath made, we will rejoice and be glad in it."
Today is the coin of God. He has given it to us to spend on what we will. But it is not what today brings to us but what we bring to today that gives life its warmth and color and significance. Happiness does not just happen. All days look gray to the gray of heart. Life gives itself to him who gives himself to life.
If we put off our happiness to a day when everything is right we may put it off forever. But if we make the best and the most of today we shall be able to make the best and the most of tomorrow, and we shall see that we have made the best and the most of all our life.
The most fortunate person has only a few wonderful events in his life. But if we learn to live moment by moment, day by day, our whole life will be a wonderful event.
The Lord has made today that we should live in it, yet few of us learn to live in today. Either we look back and say, "How wonderful it was!" or we look forward and say, "How wonderful it will be!"
Let us begin today to live in today, remembering much but letting go of the past, expecting much but working now to realize our expectations, gaining the most we can out of everything and not spurning it because it has no more to give, doing the best we can about everything and not condemning ourselves for failing to do more, appreciating what there is to be enjoyed and facing what there is to be handled in the faith that God is good and that His good works out.
Today may be a day of gratification. Then let us savor it. There is pleasure in the enjoyment of beautiful happenings. Today may be a day of overcoming. Then let us meet it. There is fulfillment in meeting what we have to meet.
Yesterday and tomorrow are a dream and a vision. To find in today fullness of lifeāthis is to find the secret of living. Take today, whatever it may offer, and live it to the full. If there is much in it, enjoy that much. If there is little, make the most of that little.
How merciful is God, who requires us to live but one day at a time, who has made the day and the night and divided them with sleep! Eternity might overwhelm us if we had to face or comprehend it all at once, but we can face it and can comprehend it one day at a time!
We are as travelers on a journey, and we have arrived at today. Whether we find ourselves sojourning in a valley or climbing among mountains, let us make the most of where we are. Both the valley and the mountain are experiences. A noble spirit will invest the valley with a glory as of high places. A peaceful mind will touch the mountains with content. To the brave of heart and the inquisitive of mind the journey has an infinite variety.
There is no satisfaction like the high conquest of the present. Let us face the now.
